What is Dentoalveolar Surgery?


Dentoalveolar surgery involves any surgery to the teeth, gums and jawbone. Your dentist may refer you to Dr Oztel to determine whether you require dentoalveolar surgery to treat a variety of dental conditions, including:

  • Extraction of teeth with large or curved roots
  • Extraction of teeth with high risk of damage to nerves
  • Extraction of teeth with high risk of causing perforation in your sinus lining (oral-antral communication)
  • Teeth that have been root canal treated that are brittle
  • Impacted teeth
  • Retained roots
  • Removal of bone growths in the palate or jaw (tori or exostosis)
  • Removal of cysts in the jaw
  • Removal/biopsy of soft tissue lumps or growths

What Does Dentoalveolar Surgery Involve?


Dr Oztel will take a thorough history and conduct a comprehensive oral exam. He will review your x-rays and CT scan and may request further investigations where required. Dr Oztel will discuss your treatment options, explain the benefits and risks of the treatment options and answer any questions you may have.

Depending on the extent of the surgery, Dr Oztel may perform your procedure under local anaesthetic (while you are awake) in the dental chair or under general anaesthetic in a day hospital setting.

What to Can You Expect After Dentoalveolar Surgery?


Recovery time after dentoalveolar surgery depends on your age, medical conditions and complexity of the surgery performed.

Following surgery, is it normal to experience some pain, swelling and discomfort. These symptoms can by managed through rest, pain relief and applying cold compress. Depending on the complexity of your procedure, your symptoms may subside within a few days, or up to one week. A soft diet is required for short period post-surgery.
